Valentine’s Day always seems idyllic but in reality, most people have children and unfortunately grandma or grandpa isn’t always near enough to look after them when you want to enjoy a romantic night. Don’t fear, because this year you can still fully enjoy this day, even with your young ones at your side.
Here are a few ideas to enjoy the day together:
Kick the day off with a heart themed breakfast
Prepare a delicious breakfast with the whole family. All you will need is a heart shaped cookie cutter and then you can make almost anything with this theme – from flapjacks to toast to scones. You can treat yourself by adding strawberries and cream because, after all, this day only happens once a year.
A movie night with the family
Place a huge matrass in front of the television with lots of blankets and pillows, and let the whole family watch a child friendly movie. Pop some popcorn and prepare hot chocolate or a milkshake for everyone. As soon as the children has drifted off to dreamland, you and your husband can switch over to romantic comedies and enjoy a glass of red wine.
Let the children’s creative juices flow by doing DIY arts and crafts. You can make homemade gifts for each other, or for their grandparents who is staying far from you. You can also make decorations for the house to create a festive atmosphere.
Make gift voucher for each other
You can make gift vouchers for each other that you can use during the year. The kids can have items such as “Piggy night”, “Ice-cream outing” or “Sleep half an hour later” on theirs. You and your husband can also participate and make gift vouchers for each other that says things like, “I’ll do the washing for a week” or “I’ll stick you for dinner at your favourite restaurant”.
Have a tea party or picnic
Throw a big blanket open on the grass or set a table with cups and saucers. You can bake heart shaped cookies and enjoy it with tea.
Children may not be able to pay the bill at a restaurant but at the end of the day they take care of all the little things, like a flower from the garden and an unexpected hug. In the end, you are your child’s favourite Valentine so make the day as special as possible for them, even if only with a chocolate and a letter.
