Before you have properly rubbed your eyes, the new year has started with a bang and you and your family have relapsed into your old habits and the stress and tension are building up.
The start of a new year, however, is also an opportunity for a fresh start, establishing new routines and trying to get rid of stuff that cause unnecessary stress and tension. Being well organised could help to make your household and other parts of your life function like a well-oiled machine.
There are many ways of making sure that everything is running smoothly and that you do not permanently feel that you are trying to juggle too many balls. A lack of communication and planning will always have you on the back foot.
One of the ways to make sure that you and your family are more organised, is to have family meetings. These could be held weekly or monthly and it is important to keep them fast, short and easy. Use a calendar so that you can take minutes of everything that has to happen and so that specific members of the family can be allotted responsibility for certain tasks. The calendar can also be made available digitally so that everybody can access it on their cell phones and computers and know what is going on at all times.
Preparing food for a family every day is a big task. In this regard a meal plan can be very handy. It could, for instance, be prepared on a Sunday night and everybody can give inputs about what to eat that week. A decision can also be made as to who is going to prepare it or will help with the preparation. A meal plan will also obviate the need to shop every day and will eliminate the frustration of having to decide every afternoon what was going to be had for supper and who was going to buy the ingredients.
With children going back to school it could also feel as if there is more chaos than usual in the household. In this regard make sure that routines are well established early in the year. A meal plan can also facilitate fast decisions about what food the children was going to take to school.
Organise a spot where the children can do homework without disrupting the whole household and where al the accessories could be stored easily and fast. Also give the children tasks to do in and around the house so that everybody can help to make sure that everything was going to go smoothly at home in the new year.
